Ripping And Burning Via Itunes Extremely Slow

I have a 17" iMac G4 800 with 1GB of memory and a built in Superdrive. Lately, importing tracks from CD's into iTunes 4.9 (in AAC format) has become extremely slow. The same holds true later on when I attempt to burn files from my iTunes library to CD. This frustratingly slow performance just happened recently. Is there anything I can do to speed things up?
