dmg and img

How would you define what exactly is a dmg. or an img. ?
And what is the differnce between the two?

cabbage is on a distinguished road
They are both disc images that Disc Copy creates. img for pre OS X. dmg for OS X. They are like an .iso but only better since you can mount them without copying the data to your hard drive. I wish PC's had them.
