Lost all info in all applications!

I have had this G4 IBook for 3 days. I have been entering contacts, music, pictures etc. Then msn messenger kicked me off and wasnt taking my password and asked me to reset to defaults for it- and I did- nothing happened and I kept working. The email froze up and I noticed a microsoft error reporting program was on in the toolbar but wouldnt do anything when I clicked on it. I shut down and when I restarted it looked like I hadnt done anything on the computer. All the applications were wiped and thought I had just opened them up for the first time. Even the trash was emptied and the desktop image gone. I have lost all emails, pic, music, and contacts. Please help...wondering if I should take the computer back.
