Preview Pane Causes Hang

Not sure what happened, or when, but when I view finder windows in column view -- the default -- and select a file at the root of a folder, where the window that would generally pop-up to the right shows file info and a preview of the item, the Finder hangs and I get the spinning disc. I suppose it could have been caused by one of the probably unneccesary programs I've installed recently, but I have no idea how to figure out which one or what to do about it. It's making operating my system very frustrating. I have a brand-new PowerPC G5 desktop, with the fastest processors available, 4GB of memory, and tons of hard disk space. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
