Seeing Images On the Net/safari

I have a MAC power book with os x. with safari.
I can use the internet just fine but cannot see images on websites anymore. furthermore, i cannot see the "clicks" - there is sometimes only a remnant of a box but no letters, so I have to guess which "click" is which or sometimes there is nothing. another example, if images are within the webpage - nothing but an empty box. if there is a download option, i can download the "pdf" version, open it, and see the image just fine.

a while ago i did an update but that didn't help either.
maybe i inadvertantly changed the settings???? i hope it's something easy to fix??

i would appreciate a solution! thanks.
