Iphoto Library

I was wondering if there was any way to use iPhoto to organize my photos more like iTunes organizes my music. Is it possible for me to keep my original photos in the folders they are already in on my hard drive (or external hard drive) and NOT copy them to the iPhoto library folder. I looked for something similar to the iTunes preference to choose whether or not to copy the music file to the iTunes library but I found no such thing. I also can't choose in iPhoto to show the location of the original file of a selected image. Are these functions I have to live without? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
Jimmy
