Cut Greyed Out

I'm using a Powerbook with 10.4.3 and the cut command is always greyed out. The keyboard shortcut doesn't work either. Any ideas why?

What application(s) are you trying it in? If you're talking about the Finder, you just can't cut files/folders, period.
