media player 9

After migrating my data from a g4 1 ghz powerbook to a g4 1,67 Ghz windows mediaplayer would not play old media player files anymore.
I deleted all logs and preferences in the various folders and reinstalled it, still didn't work. I used the disk utility to repair all the rights, still didn't work. I used the VLC player and the Mplayer, they were good for some files, but some files they simply wouldn't play.
I used cocktail to repair the rights, still doesn't work.
I logged on as a different user, didn't work.
The Windows Media Player always opens, but it doesn't play the files. There is always an error message saying something about the data and that it can't be played. It doesn't even play the windows media sample movie anymore.
I asked my local apple dealer and followed all the instructions he gave me (see the stuff i tried), but nothing solved the problem.

Do you think I have to format the computer and install it all over again or is there any other way you suggest to solve the problem.

Ugh. Windows Media Player is always a headache on the Mac. The new installer doesn't install support for anything that was coded for WMP 6.3 or earlier. Chances are, your videos are encoded in the old standard.

One other place i can suggest going is http://flip4mac.com/ and checking out WMVPlayer. It's a Quicktime plug-in that lets you play WMV files in Quicktme. The downside is that it costs $10 to the watch the whole file (the trial lets you view half of it).

But give it a shot. If it works, then pitch the 10 bux at these guys. They're very nice. If not, you've lost nothing.

Also, you may want to check out FileJuicer. It extracts video, audio, etc from older, hard to open video files. It claims to support WMV, but I haven't tested it myself. (requires 10.3.9 or higher)

I have a copy of WMVPlayer and it is by far the best investment you can make. Now I can watch 90% of WMV files perfectly in QuickTime, and websites with WMV files load just like QuickTime movies.
