OS9 install question & transfer question Hi Reading through these forums I am hoping that someone here can advise me on this problem. I just bought a used tower G4 with twin chips & OS10.35 installed. It did not come with any disks. When I attempted to run OS9 I received a message that OS9 was not installed - I assume that the last owner removed it. I have an OS9.22 system disk from another computer, but have been told that I cannot use that because the OS9 that the computer needs is a modified version that is on thew OS10 disk - which I don't have. Any ideas? Also, I want to connect my old G3 to the new G4 to transfer the data and programs, but the book says that I should do this with firewire and that both computers should be running OSX. My old computer is too old and not enough memory to run OSX. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks Tony Roberts

'I just bought a used tower (PowerMac) G4 with twin chips (dual ??? MHz / GHz) & (Mac) OS (X) 10.3(.)5 installed ... It did not come with any disks.' - since you say 'twin chips' (dual processors) you have at least a dual 450 MHz PowerMac G4. If so, it will allow only System 9.0.4 or later to be installed. 'When I attempted to run OS ('System') 9 I received a message that OS9 was not installed - I assume that the last owner removed it.' - never assume; and - no, 'System 9.x' may have never been installed. When you say attempted to run 'System' 9.x do you mean, by you double clicking on a non-MacOS X application; or, do you mean - you attempted to launch 'Classic'? 'I have an OS ('System') 9.2(.)2 system disk from another computer (whose model number is not provided), but have been told that I cannot use that because the OS ('System') 9 that the computer needs is a modified version that is on the OS 10 disk - which I don't have ... Any ideas?' - never heard of such. You must have a 'retail' installation disc of 'System 9.x'. 'Also, I want to connect my old G3 to the new G4 to transfer the data and programs, but the book says that I should do this with firewire and that both computers should be running OSX.' - what book? 'My old computer is too old and not enough memory to run OSX.' - are you saying this, or 'the book'? A dual 450 MHz PowerMac G4 will run System 9.0.4 through 9.2.2 (but for 'Panther' MacOS X 10.3.x or 'Tiger' MacOS X 10.4.x - you must have System 9.2.2), and MacOS X 10.0.0 through 10.4.5 (with 10.4.6 coming soon ... to a Mac near you ...). If indeed you have a dual 450 MHz PowerMac G4, chances are you have only 128 MB of RAM; thus, yes - you need to increase the RAM amount for decent performance. Say no less than 1 GB of RAM? 'Any advice would be very much appreciated.' - unless I was able to correctly identify your model Mac, more specific information is needed.

Hi Barhar Thanks for your response - I appreciate it. I believe that part one of my problem is taken care of. I contacted the seller and they are going to mail a restore disk to me which will reinstall the System 9. I'll wait until I get the system sorted out before I attempt to transfer the files. My old computer is a Power PC Mac 3, 300mhz, 192 mb Ram & OS 8.1 The new one is Power Mac G4/1.225DP 512/160 GB, 256 3200 dimm, 256 MB Dimm PC 3200. (I got that info off the shipping documents). Thanks Tony
