Bumping Safari and iCal out of Docks way

How can I bump the Safari and iCal windows over, out of the way of my dock. (i have my dock vertically on the left)
In other programs (ie. IE) I can option-command-D twice to hide and then show the dock, which bumps the window over.

Does the green button do the trick? It works for me, but I have my Dock on the right.
