Try FFMPEGX

ffmpegX can certainly convert .avi to .mp4, and Quicktime Pro should be able to transcode the .mp4 to .mov afterward.

As long as it (the AVI) is encoded in a QT compatible codec, QT Pro should work just fine. The only problem you may run into is with the IV50 files, which would require using QT Pro under Classic mode.

Note that for QuickTime to read most AVIs, you'll need the Divx QT codec, available at divx.com.

ffmpegX is an awesome all-in-one solution that works independently of QuickTime.

MPEG Streamclip

I have a program called MPEG Streamclip for doing that kind of thing - I find it works better than Quicktime Pro, and its free. You can get it from:

Hope this helps!

Also, if the AVI file is a DivX one, you can use DiVX Doctor II to re-encode it to a MOV file.

With DivX 6 installed, the re-encode step in unnecessary.
