button mapping

is there a way to map buttons like those on a game controller/tablet/very many buttoned mouse that don't show up in the mouse and keyboard preference pane to mouse functions like left and right clicking and stuff and if not through os x directly then through a program?

Check with the mouse maker. I mapped my Logitech mouse using their own software.

USB Overdrive will let you assign functions to any any button on any USB peripheral.

I can't use USB Over Drive it messes up the function of the tablet because it thinks its a mouse and the curser just gets stuck in the corner.

What is the mouse maker? This sounds interesting

The "mouse maker" would be the company your mouse is from. I.e. Logitech or Microsoft or...
