File Icons not showing on desktop

File Icons not showing on desktop

When I save a file to the desktop, regardless of application or type, there is a long delay (sometimes minutes) before it appears on my desktop. If I try to open through the application it shows in the directory, I just can't see it on the desktop.
Any ideas?
Please help.
