Turning off startup sound? Mac shareware/freeware site?

1) I suspect the solution to this is going to be ridiculously easy, but it is evading me. I dislike the loud trumpety sound my computer makes immediately after i switch it on. How can i disable it?

2) Are there any mac-specific sites that have freeware and/or shareware to download? I mean the equivalent of tucows.com or download.com.

Cheers. I am running Panther, if it matters.

1) Try this ...

... or this ...

... or this one (which I use) ...

2) http://macupdate.com/ and http://versiontracker.com/macosx/ are both good.

Alternatively just plug a set of headphones or external speakers into the audio out and you won't hear it again unless you either put them on or switch on the speakers.

Thats odd, my iMac G5 running tiger emits this startup sound from an internal speaker.
Having external speakers plugged in does not silence it, but this little app works well.

Allows you to adjust the volume or turn it off.
