Sleep Mode Problems

I am not sure if this is Intel specific or not. I have an intel duo core Imac 17" and recently when I leave the computer on overnight I come back in the morning and it is in sleep mode. It won't wake from this sleep mode either. I've unplugged and replugged in the mouse/keyboard. I've done various different key strokes. The only way I can fix it is turning it off by holding down the power button. Which I know is not good for the computer. I also after restarting it like that, checked to make sure it didn't have sleep mode activated, and it was on never go to sleep. I than decided to run a disk utility verify disk on it, and after that was run the computers screen began to look all screwed up and fragmented. Anyone know what's causing this, or any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thank you in advance

You most likey have ran a disk utility that has not been made to work with a intel mac yet. So most likely you will need to do a Archive reinstall. That way you will not lose any of your setting or files.

What I meant to say was I ran "Disk Utility". The one that is built into OS X. Sorry for the confusion. Unless this isn't yet compatible with OS X. It did come on the machine though.

Disk Utility that came with the OS X installation won't cause any trouble.

Have you installed the latest firmware updates? These fixed similar problems I had on my MacBook Pro.
