Resetting Administrator Password in OS 9

I have a G3 running OS 9.2 which was loaned to me by a friend.
I recently set up a second user account in order to let my children use the computer on a limited basis.
I now need to make changes to that new account ---- adjusting the limitations, etc. ---- but apparently have to do so from within the original account, which I gather must be the administrator account by default.
However, I don't have the password it asks for in order to get into that first account, nor does my friend remember what it is. In fact, he doesn't think he ever set up a password on that machine.
Nevertheless it is asking for one, and so I am stuck in the new account only, with extremely limited privileges.
Is there a way to get into the data and change the administrator password so that I can access and control the whole computer?
My technical level is very much a beginner.
Thanks

If you have the install discs for that computer you can start up using disc 1 and go to File/Reset Password. Insert cd in drive and restart holding the c key down till you see the file menu and desktop again.

Don't reinstall OS X as you will be prompted to do when you start up with this disc, however.

Am I mistaken or did the original poster say "Mac OS 9?"

Try booting with the Shift key down into the first account. If you can do that, trash the MultiUser Preference file. Otherwise, boot off the OS 9 CD and do it.
