    Slow internet.. that narrows it down. There are many topics on this in the Apple Support Forums, but so far, I only found one verified solution:
    Guys,

    I resolved it - changed the DNS servers to

    4.2.2.1
    4.2.2.2

    and disabled the ipv6

    Bingo. I still have lag but I think that is the remote server. Once contact is achieved the pages load way faster.

    I am still baffled why it seemed faster at first. Or maybe I was just impressed going from dial-up to DSL.

    In any case - thank you. I believe the problem is resolved.
