mail icon boucning in the dock

mail icon boucning in the dock

I cannot seem to open my email , it just bounces in the dock and I was wonering if it is linked to the fact that I am also having trouble installing the latest intel update from apple , it trys to install but as it finishes it dumps the application into the trash...any ideas please!!
