encoding movies to dvd crashes iDVD and Toast

hey folks, i'm completely new to macs. i have a macbook 2.0 w/ 2gb. when i try to make a dvd from my personal videos i've imported from my windows machine, iDVD and Toast 7 crash. i've tried to delete the preference files for both programs (and quicktime as that is in the crash log) and still have the same issue. i've ram "rember" (memtest) to check the ram and it passed with flying colors. here are the threads that crash:
