Exclamation OS X 10.2 Will Not Boot! Help please..

Hello,

I am sort of a newbie when it comes to mac. Switched about a year ago and will never go back to windows. I am have mac mini that runs perfect. However, i am trying to fix an older ibook g4 that is running jaguar. The gray apple screen appears breifly, and then it goes to a command prompt that says:

Ethernet Address: (the address) what ever it may be irelavent
Firewire Address: (the address)

Localhost/root:

This is far as the boot process goes. I have tried booting into safe mode. Nothing happens. Same screen. I do not have have a jaguar installation disk. I have a tiger one. I have tried running disk utility off the tiger cd and i get an error message saying that disk utility can not run because it can not communicate with the drive. (something along those lines) I tried the verify disk option in disk utilty and it says that the Macintosh HD appears to be OK. This ibook also has OS9 on it. I can boot into that perfectely. The tiger installation cd is useless to me because I can not use it to upgrade or reinstall os x. (its the cd that came with my mac mini). I have also tried to fsck at the command prompt. Nothing. I have tried running disk utility at the command prompt and i receive a message saying: DiskARB couldn't be activated! I have tried resetting the RAM. Nothing. It seems like no matter what i do it will not boot into OS X. I thought the hard drive was shot but it boots into OS9 which on the same drive. Wierd. I have also tried disk warrior to rebuiild the structure of the drive and that completed but it did not solve my problem. I did an apple hardware test and the HD appears to be ok. Is their any hope of booting into OS X ever or am i stuck with OS 9? Any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me like a software-level problem. I think I would try installing 10.3 or 10.4 using the "Archive & Install" option but preserve users and network settings.
