Navigating columns: how to go up 1 level

So I'm in Finder/Applications in List View (its VERY long) and I want to collapse the folder. Like go from Safari to Applications. There must be a quick, easy way, like in Windows Explorer when you hit the left arrow button, to do this in the Finder, Path Finder, etc. But I've tried every key combo I can think of. I can't believe they would have left such an obvious navigational tool out. As inventors often say, "There's just gotta be a way!"

Am I experiencing deja-vu? I could have sworn that you asked this already in another thread. If you're in OS 9 or OS X, click on the title bar of the window where the words are while holding down the command key. You'll then see a hierarchical list of the folders.

Also, in OS X if you click on the lozenge at the top right of the window, you'll get the brushed metal Finder window and it has a forward and back button. And if you control click on the toolbar you'll have the option to customize the toolbar, to which you can then drag the hierarchical list button to the toolbar.
