beige g3 osx installation problem

i have a problem when trying to install osx onto my beige powerpc.
its my first mac, i have two of them but one needs a new gfx card as the on board is faulty and i'm waiting for that to arrive. i'm not a complete technostupid, i'm pc + hardware savvy, but new to the world of mac. in this way certainly.

basically, the problem is when i get to the "select device" part, to select what volume to install, my hard drive doesn't appear. the cd drive appears, and is greyed out of course, but nothing else appears.

i've tried... uhm... 8 hard drives so far, and yes all ata-66, perfectly running, deep formatted and cleaned and checked hard drives. i've cleaned them up, haven't formatted in any type, just erased and unformatted them because i haven't got a program on a pc that can format in the correct mac format. just the normal ntfs/fat/fat32/linux etc.

i've replaced the ata cables, the cd rom drive, switched ide ports, jumper settings... tried it using different ram configurations... i just don't know where to go now.

if anyone can help me out i'd be glad. i spent the night on google but havent seen a similar problem so far.

even if it's just a "you fool... you need to plug x into y" or suchlike. i don't care. i just need assistance.

thanks in advance.

See if this link (installing MacOS X on Beige G3) helps any. Particularly the notes on installing OS X on the first HD partition which must be smaller than 8GB:

Quote:
remove all but one (largest) RAM DIMM
remove all PCI cards
remove all attached serial and SCSI devices
CD must be Master in order for MacOS X install to boot from CD
Must install MacOS X in first HD partition. This must be smaller than 8 GB.
repartition 2nd (IDE1) HD into 6 GB and 3 GB partitions. Use MacOS X disk utility from Installer menu.
format 2nd HD (HFS+/Extended) as part of the MacOS X install
Note: Your boot setup (Open Firmware/PRAM) will be modified as part of the install
I only installed MacOS 9.1 after MacOS X. I installed it in my 2nd (3 GB) partition.
