VNC/ARD question

I have Apple Remote Desktop Sharing enabled and am allowing VNC viewers. Now my question is how to connect to that machine with a vncviewer and specify the depth. It seems any vnc client I use will only connect at truecolor. I try to specify different depths, but nothing works. Any ideas?
