Will not restart or shut down

My Mac iBook G4 will not let me shut down or restart. Also, the dock has completely disappeared. On top of that, when i try to open certain applications like Powerpoint i get this error message saying that it is error -600.

What is wrong with my computer? Can you help me, please?

Well something is going wrong. To see if this is software or a system wide hardware issue try creating a test user account and boot to that one to see if the problem follows you. This way we can get a better idea if that problem is software or hardware.

In the accounts pane (control panel) you can show/hide the shutdown / restart buttons for an account. Check if this is the case (not checked) and if so, check the option. For the dock, check the dock settings, maybe it is set to auto hide.

Check your harddrive for possible problems, have permissions fixed.

Good luck, Kees
