dmg downloads not working

I'm having a problem where some .dmg files are not downloading.
For example,

http://downloads.blurb.com/booksmart/BookSmart_1.9.2.dmg

just displays a blank page with a title bar of "BookSmart_1.9.2.dmg (GIF Image, 1x1 pixels)"

However,

http://www.rubicode.com/Downloads/RCDefaultApp-2.0.1.X.dmg

works fine.

The problem seems to occur consistently on Safari 3.0.4 and Firefox 2.0.0.9. My Mac is a Dual 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 with 1GB RAM, running Mac OS X 10.4.11

Another example of a problem download:

http://downloads.flock.com/index.php?os=mac&product=flock-1.0.1&platform=mac&platform=mac

just displays "index.php.gif 1x1 pixels" in the title bar.

No problem at all.

You appear to have either a transient problem or one that is peculiar to your network connection. None of your "problem" downloads cause any problems at all with my installation of Safari 3.0.4 under MacOS X 10.4.11.

I'm guessing the root of the problem is somehow related to the fact that the browser seems to think the files are actually GIF images.

I downloaded the RCDefaultApp software to see if it might highlight an obvious file association problem, but to my untrained eye it all looks OK.

This has been happening for some time so I'm confident it's not transient or 10.4.11 related.

Any suggestions appreciated, Thanks

Check your associations for .dmg disk image files.

Re-install Safari

Repair permissions.

Those are my guesses.
