CAn't copy from external HD

I've had an external LaCie 80gb drive for about 3 years. This morning, since I made a copy of a folder on it, I've been unable to copy from it or within it. I can copy to it. I've rebooted, and run repair verifications, though only on my Mac HD as Disk Utility sees the external drive but won't let me verify it. Any ideas please?

I don't know how or why but it's all back to normal now. At least it's made me get round to backing up a load of recent work and photos of my grandson, just in case.
