Log in freezes

Leopard 10.5.1. Three users. When a user logs out the screen/cursor freezes. The only option is to reboot. This is happening too frequently.

Crash logs show no problem (I wish I was getting kernal panics and then at least I can investigate what the cause is).

I have:

1. Repaired permissions.
2. Disengaged parental controls.
3. Done a complete erase and reinstall.

None of these have worked.

Any suggestions?

zo219 is on a distinguished road
One, before you do and erase and install, there are a number of other, intermediate steps. The first is probably to create another account and see if it has the same problems ... and/or start up with your install disk and run Disk Utility from there, which is the only way your working volume can be repaired.

Another step is to run a Deep Clean with MainMenu or similar app and restart. Yet another is to do a Safe boot, which turns off all third-party extensions, by holding down the Shift key.

Have you reset the PRAM? Hold down Command-Option-P-R at startup and let it go through the chime three times. And run your Hardware Test? It's on the Install disk, hold down Option key at startup.

Beyond that, Install and Archive is perfectly safe and much easier - this installs a new system, puts the old one in a folder called Previous System, and sets aside the User directories.
