Epson software not opening. HELP

I have an iMac with OS 9.2.2, and an Epson 1640SU Photo Perfection scanner.

Both have been very happy together for years; now they are not speaking. The software will not open from the desktop at all. The Scanner is on and appears functional. I have checked all USB cables, followed the on/off sequence, tried reinstalling software. Have not been able to find any information online re trashing extensions or preferences, so haven't tried that.

Scanner software will not install off the CD. Other elements (TWAIN, Textbridge etc) install fine, but clicking INSTALL for Scanner Software does nothing.

I recently dumped as much software off this little machine as i could to lighten its load, but don't think i trashed anything other than Pagemaker, Illustrator and gobs of images. HELP. I'm an illustrator, and this is starting to hurt.

Have you been into the chooser? Select the scanner in there? If not try messing with that.

If that doesn't work and all is ok in there, find your disc and try some of the utilities. Not sure which ones will fix that issue, but there is a way to repair without loosing things I believe.

Man it has been awhile since I messed with Imac and such.
