Adobe Cue Messed Up Macbook Pro, Safe Mode Is Wonky

After installing updates to my Macbook Pro, I restarted my laptop but it wouldn't load OS X. It just went to a blue screen and wouldn't take me to my log-in page. So after doing some research online, I found out the problem was that I installed Adobe CS2 a couple of days ago, and Adobe Cue messes up Macbook Pros this way. The only option, I was told, was to boot my computer in Safe Mode, and then uninstall Cue from there.

If I'm not wrong, holding down the Shift key when starting up the laptop (after the start-up chime but before the apple on the grey screen appears) will launch safe mode. I've tried this more than 10 times, but each time, instead of safe mode, the computer goes to a black screen with white text that says 'Darwin/BSD' at the top. It asks for my log-in and password, then waits for all kinds of commands that I do not know. Doesn't seem like Safe Mode to me? I did more scouting about online and suspect it's UNIX or something.

How do I get to Safe Mode properly? Holding down the shift key just isn't working! And if it's impossible to get to Safe Mode, can I uninstall Adobe Cue from that black (UNIX?) screen? If so, how? The whole Adobe Creative package is installed under my Applications folder, if that helps.
