Powerbook G4 Boots with black screen

My Powerbook (G4, OS V: 10.4.10 or 11 recently updated superdrive firmware) had been displaying the gray box with a restart command in several languages a little while ago, but it stopped, so I stupidly stopped worrying, but yesterday it began displaying a white screen with black text, something about firmware and system time and a command line saying mac-boot or shut-down, and when I chose mac-boot, it said it couldn't do it. So I let it sit for awhile, tried turning it on again, and it makes the 'startup noise' but nothing appears on the screen, just black. The fans and whatnot are going, but nothing happens, even after about a minute. I appreciate any advice you have, the computer was given to me, and is about 2/3 years old and the only computer I have.
