hrmiller is on a distinguished road
Networking Leopard/Solaris/Tiger

3 home-business machines:
- Sun Ultra5 running Solaris 9, long history (lots of archived customer info, C-source tools) on this machine. primary account is rod, uid 3308, gid 10.
- iMac running Tiger. primary account is rod, uid 3308, gid 10.
- Macbook running Leopard. primary user is rod, uid & gid not 3308 and 10.

Network connections are ok (ping any machine from any other).

Sun has the printer. imac and sun are networked so imac print jobs print OK. home folder on sun mounted on imac, can read/write from imac. Want to get down to one keyboard and mouse for both systems.

imac has a 500GB external disk drive. Want to back up (incremental dumps or dumb tars) sun and imac to that drive. Might as well set up backups from macbook too.

macbook seems hopeless w/o netinfo. need to change uid and gid for rod so that rod's files on sun can be viewed. at one time had those files mounted but rod on macbook couldn't view them.

Long range druther is to be able to ssh from any machine to any other. As indicated above (since sun and imac share the same physical desktop), want to get down to one keyboard and mouse for both machines.

I have good but dated computer systems experience, and need help. Lots of time has been spent googling, with no concrete as far as I could tell leads being turned up.

Maybe I'm attempting the wrong things here, and I'm open to suggestions.

Lots of stuff here, so perhaps separate threads can be started for each topic. I leave that up to how the responses go.

Thanks!

Rod
