PS CS3 Twain not wkg w.Brother MFC420CN

Hi - I am trying to scan images from a Brother MFC-420CN scanner/printer/fax machine, connected to my MacBook Pro via USB.
The printer works as a printer, but not as a scanner. Physical connectivity doesn't seem to be an issue. Can anyone provide a clue?

Thanks-
Steve

Here's my troubleshooting:

When in Photoshop, I tried "File > Import > Brother TWAIN" and got the error message (a dialog box) that said:

"failed to connect to the device
- Check the I/F cable connection between the device & your computer
- Please turn OFF the device once, and then turn ON the device again

Then try again
(MTW005)

(OK)"

Did those things, didn't help. I have tried running Photoshop CS3 under Rosetta and non under Rosetta. No difference, doesn't work.

From Brother's site, I have downloaded & run/installed the following drivers:

Brother 420CN CUPS driver filename: brxubprt11c.dmg
Brother 420CN Remote Setup Driver: brxrsp121.dmg
Brother 420CN TWAIN driver: brxtwain302.dmg
Brother 420CN Driver set: brxubprt11c.dmg

Also, Brother 420CN Firmware updater: Main0En231.dmg
(note, when running this, it "couldn't find a printer to update")

I even went to the MacOS X installation DVD, and sure enough (as I remembered) the Brother drivers were all installed (they were grayed out).

Can anyone provide a clue? I think I have exhausted my troubleshooting options unsuccessfully.

Thanks -
Steve
