Mystery Erratic Behaviour - Powerbook G4 Titanium 500

Hello

My husband really doesn't want to write off his Titanium Laptop but we are having a real tough time trying to work out what is wrong with it. We put it away in its box and when we got it out again it wasn't working properly.

The main problems:

It won't start up from the battery but it will run on the battery if you remove the power cord when it starts up.

On occasion it beeps 3 times on start-up. We have taken the extra ram in and out which varys results but not much.

It makes an awful distortion sound on start up but music can be played through its speakers fine. Indicative of anything?

I can reset-navram ok but when I get to set-defaults it freezes rather than returning ok.

I tried resetting the PMU - I think the button on the back does it but I found some alternative instructions - no change.

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. We want our machine to return to its reliable happy self!

Oh and also - sometimes nothing will appear on the screen on-startup but not always.
