Adding files to external hard drive

I have tried to add files to a repartitioned external hard drive that I unlocked but when I do it asks for my username and password then tells me I dont have the right privileges. How do I get the privileges? I'm the only user on the computer and I'm pretty sure I'm the administrator. Do you have any ideas?
My computer runs Leopard by the way, pretty much a brand new computer.

Hi Criney, how is the external hard drive formatted? HFS+, NTFS..?
