Broken OSX ftp server

I'm trying to run the ftp server in OS 10.2.4. When I click on the start button in the sharing pane, it turns blue for maybe twice as long as I hold the mouse down, and then fails to do anything. No beep, blink, error message, nothing. It just goes back to the start button, waiting to be futily clicked again.

Any thoughts? Anyone? Anywhere?

Gabe

DeltaMac will become famous soon enough
Can you start ANY of the sharing services? Clicking on the check bax automatically attempts to start that particular service. Is FTP the only service that will not start?

Everything else works! Clicking the check box does the same as the start button (nothing). What's with this? I don't need BSD installed for a simple thing like this do I?

Does /var/log/ftp.log show anything interesting?

i just read "man ftpd"... there is a lot of interesting stuff in it, but all Unix level and not OS X GUI related.
