Downloading binary files

I have accidently deleted something from my macbook (leopard) and as a result I now cannot download a lot of things, particularly containing video. If for example I try and install google earth, I get a window popup that says "you have chosen to open googleearth.dmg which is a binary file. Would you like to save this file?" In the past this would have just started downloading but now after clicking save file nothing happens and it hasn't saved anywhere on my macbook.....Can you help me with what I have deleted??? I deleted adobe flash player accidently too but have since reinstalled this....I don't know if this is related??

Joe
