Unable to Install New Browser

I just bought my first Mac, a used PowerMac G4, installed OSX and now I'm trying to install a new browser, because my computer came with Internet Explorer...and it keeps shutting down and loading pages incorrectly.

I tried downloading Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Cyberduck, but I've had the same problem. After the download finishes, it does nothing, so I double click, opening Disk Copy, which tells me that its "unable to verify" the file.

I come from a strictly Windows background, so I don't even know where to start. What I do know is that I cannot function with my current browser and I must change to another, non-Microsoft one that actually works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you boot up in OS X or Classic?

Make sure you are higher than 10.1 OS X. Then, repair permmissions: apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions.

Let us know if you still can't download and use a browser after that.

Which exact operating system does your system report? From Apple in upper left corner > About this Mac. The window will show the exact version and update, e.g. 10.1.4, 10.2.7, 10.3.8, etc. What does it report?

It's telling me that I'm running 10.0.3. Is there any way to get it to work with this version, or do I have to get something more current?

And to answer your question, Madelin, my computer was previously owned by a unoversity, which they probably installed Internet Explorer on, I assume for the sake of convienience, and an old version, too, that doesn't work at all.

This is what I thought. You've got a computer with the first edition of OS X which is older than Firefox (FF came out in 2004: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox...m-requirements and the OS you have (Cheetah: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_v10.0) came out in 2001 so you definitely need to upgrade your OS X to run Firefox or most current browsers.

Hope that helps!

You could start by running System Preferences/Software Update to get the most updated Cheetah you have, but you're going to want to get at least Panther (10.3) as soon as you can.
