Quicktime not responding

When I try to open mpeg files or avi files with quicktime it never responds. I have to force quit and i try again but never works. I restarted my computer a few times also but have no clue what it could be. For some reason though it does open small mpeg files I have taken with my digital camera but actual films it does not open. It was working fine until a couple days ago...
