Upload digital camera photos automatically to computer

I am working on a project for school in which my SLR is going to be taking self-timered shots of people. I was wondering if anyone knew of any programs that would allow for the photos to automatically appear on my laptop?

I would like the audience to be able to see the photo that has been taken of them, and reviewing the photo on the camera itself it's really an option.

I know this probably sounds slightly confusing. Any help would be appreciated though. As this is an interactive art project, I will not be around to upload the photos myself, which is why I am in need to a program that will send the image from the camera to appear on my laptop on its own.

I say a post on a forum about photography that was talking about that. Apparently, if you use a Nikon, the software that comes with it allows you to do that.
The post didn't mention if the guy was using Mac or PC though.
