Carbon Copy Cloner - file associations problem (no icons)

I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my drive to another higher capacity drive. The cloning process went smoothly. Afterwards I noticed my file icons were all blank and setting the default application would not work. The default appears as some .ico file. I ran Disk Warrior through it and it found some problems that it was able to repair. Now, setting the default app works but my icons still appear blank. I can double click on a file and the correct app will launch but the file icons are still blank.

Anyone experience this or have a suggestion on what to do next? I'm running the latest version of Tiger with all the current updates.

How did you notice the file icons are blank? Specifically:
  • Is this your boot drive or is it an external or slave drive?
  • How is your drive formatted?
  • Do you have the parent applications for your "problematic document files" installed?

This is my boot drive. It's formatted HFS Extended (not journaled) and all the applications for the files are present on the drive. This was a direct clone from a smaller capacity drive to larger one which I made my new boot drive. Some files belonging to the same app may have their icons show and other are just blank. They were all fine before the clone was made. CCC must have messed something up. Disk Warrior will at least launch the app, thank goodness but a lot of my files are just blank. Run every disk utility program I could find.

If you double click a file will the correct application start and open the file?

Yes, as mentioned in my first post. Everything functions normally like it was always before just that many files are missing their icons while still launching the correct apps.

Problem fixed

Ran DiskWarrior 4 and it fixed the problem. The blank icons of files on the desktop had a white icon over them and were removed. All other files that used to be without icons (plain white) now have the proper icons showing what apps they belong to. Somehow CCC missed something on the clone but DW4 fixed it.

Posting an update in the event others come across the same problem when they clone their OS to a new hard drive and use it as their startup drive.

Odd that you mention this icon issue as I just recently used SuperDuper for the 1st time to "clone" my iMacs HD to an external HD and noticed afterwards that the icons for a few image files (jpg) on my iMacs HD were missing (invisible against a white background) and all I could see was the text below where the icon should be.

I could launch the files and in the end just dragged them onto a 3rd Party app called "CocoThumbX" which fixed the problem.

(CocoThumX is a thumbnail creator amongst other things and I use it when my images have the generic thumbnail icon no matter what I do to change it in Finder.)
