Problems with MBR and WD HD

hey,
i bought a brandnew western digital external HD 500gb, and i was using it to transfer my data from mac book pro to it when ever i need to.

couple days ago i was trying to transfer a .avi file and i kept getting this code message" The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in " movie.avi" could not be read or written (error code-36). " i tried with different movies and still doesnt work, it only accepts .doc and .pdf.

this HD works pretty fine with PC. according to the search i've been doing, i noticed that lots of ppl have the same problem, but dont seem to find an answer..

your help is much appreciated.
thanks

If you have not reformated the hard drive, it will probably have the FAT32 format, which only can take files up to 4 or 6 GB, and isn't that great in general. Try reformating the disk as a mac format in disk utility.
