MisterMe will become famous soon enough
You have a DVD camcorder with a USB connection. There are numerous threads on this site which explain that you need a tape-based (miniDV or HVD) camcorder with a FireWire connection to use it with iMovie. A list of hard drive- and solid state storage-based camcorders that are compatible with iMovie 08 is available on Apple's website.

However, all is not lost. To use your DVD camcorder with iMovie you must do several things:
  • Buy an external tray-based DVD drive.
  • Download and install the free DVD ripping utility Handbrake.
  • Finalize the miniDVD that you want to edit while it is still in your camcorder.
  • Remove DVD from your camcorder and insert it into your external drive.
  • Use Handbrake to rip the DVD into an editable format.
  • Import that the editable file into iMovie 08.
