Install Leopard from external HDD

I have a fresh install of Tiger on my macbook and have an upgrade disc for Leopard, I think their is a problem with the disc as sometimes it will boot from the disc and sometimes not, when it does boot it won't install as I get a message saying 'install failed, their is no software found to install'

I was going to try putting the setup files on an external HDD and install it from there but I'm unsure how to do it, should I copy the installation files to the USB HDD then boot from the Leopard DVD then use disc utility to mount the USB HDD and try the install from there?

IMO the DVD drive is struggling to read the disc so I think the install from the USB drive might work.

Help guys

This requires a lot of time and patience, but try this tutorial. You're going to have to erase and partition your USB hard drive. Although I'm not sure it will work with USB hard drives. Best to look around here first. Good luck.

Edit: It appears the MacBook Air can boot from its USB hard drive, so this might work.
