Finder appearance has changed

Hi Guys,

at some point tonight the appearance of my finder window has changed to a simplified version i.e without any view options along the top of the finder window or any of the other buttons that normally appear. This basic window only appears when opening a new finder window from the icon for my hard disk on my desktop and from from the finder shortcut in my dock. If I select a file in an app and choose to "show in finder" the window appears normally. (see attached image for the 2 different appearances of the window)

I believe I may have messed something up earlier when trying to change the format that screen captures are saved as from png to jpeg. I attempted this by entering these commands into the terminal:

"defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpeg"

I eventually got it saving captures as jpegs after a few incorrect entries, however since I did this I am having the above mentioned issue and for the life of me cannot figure out how to reset the appearance of the finder window when opened via my desktop or dock. It may not have anything to do with this but its the only thing I can think of.

Any suggestions would be very much apppreciated!

Regards,

Jonathan

Clicking on the little pill-shaped button at the top-right of the Finder window will toggle between the two views. You can also choose "Show Toolbar" from the View menu.

To make sure the change sticks, you should open the window, change the mode, then immediately close it.
