Quicktime Problems on iMac

So, I had .mp4 video that wouldn't play. I tried downloading various programs that said they would codec me up and such... However, no of them helped and now .avi files won't even play.

The computer is running OS X 10.2.8 I reinstalled Quicktime 6.5.3 and the DivX codec. Quicktime says it lacks the proper compressors. VLC player will open the video and play it, but the screen is doubled and everything is pink and green tinted.

I tried the Preferences > Video > etc fix for VLC, but I don't even have the option prior to selecting 'Quartz' listed.

What have I done?

Did you install VLC for Jaguar?

You'll find it at the bottom of the page ... look out for this:
