Several applications crashing on opening

A couple of days ago I tried to open three often used apps: Quicken, Entourage and MSWord. They all opened and then closed immediately. I can open Word via opening a doc, but not so of the other two. When I ran an "open e-mail folder" script from the Entourage script menu it said "Apple Script, Microsoft Entourage got an error: Connection is invalid." How can I repair these apps? And how could these have got corrupted?
