MAC wont start up

My gf's mac will not start up, it freezes up on start up. I used osx disk from a friend to perform a disk repair, but it says the volume was ok. When i boot in safe mode it loads to the desktop but never finishes loading completely. it just moves really slow. I can boot in single user mode. What do I need to do to get it working, my gf needs her computer to do a project

nixgeek will become famous soon enough
How much available free space is on the hard drive? Mac OS X (and other operating systems even) start acting weird and slow when they have less than 10% of free hard drive space. Check that (if you can get to the desktop at all) and report back with the results.
