Terminally Ill? Sudo not so cool

I have been trying to install Macports on my Intel iMac running 10.4.11

- installed X11
- installed X11 sdk
- updated X11

And now the reason I hated Linux and Command line programming so much....

sudo: port: command not found in response to the following commands

sudo port -v selfupdate
sudo port install gimp

I AM the root/sudo user of the machine.....

Command line on Unix.Linux? Thanks but no thanks!

ANYONE KNOW WHAT GIVES??? I have tried googling it but can't find a suitable answer
