Creating pc compatible jpegs on a Mac

I have had a few pc users say they can't open my jpegs that were created on a Mac from OSX. I thought they were automatically cross-platform. What am I doing wrong?

What app are you saving them from?

I believe I created it directly from Illustrator CS3.

I don’t see why they’d have any problem, you’re correct, .jpgs are platform agnostic.

After some further thought, you may want to look at this thread.

Put your .jpg in a folder named test on the Desktop then open terminal.

Type ‘cd desktop/test’ (no quotes here or for any other commands I’m giving you, they’re only illustrative)

Now type ‘ls -al’ and you’ll see what some people call the “Apple double” files. These are only useful for the Mac, providing info to the system about appearance and so on.

Sometimes PC users get confused about these files and think they need to open them so it’s best to strip them out when sending files.

In Mail when you’re choosing a file to be attached you’ll see a check box for “Use Windows Friendly attachments” in the dialog box. Same thing, this strips off any Apple double files associated with the file.
