Pages and word

Hi. i've been working on documents in pages and i save them and when i want to send them to my coworkers i change the extension so they can be opened in word. Well then when they open the documents there's nothing there, and when i try to send them with yahoo mail, they are dimmed and cannot be attached to my mails. I thought there was full compatibility between word and pages but i am getting lots of trouble. Could someone please point out the compatibility situation between them or maybe a web page i can check for the proper procedures to work with pages and word?, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Changing the extension is just a name change. It does not magically change a file's contents. Pages documents are not files. They are bundles somewhat like MacOS X applications. If you want to send a document created in Pages to a colleague, then you must export it in a format that your colleague can open. When your document is complete, select the File>Export... menu item. It gives you the option of exporting to .pdf, .doc, .rtf, or .txt.
